Killed a dragon, and could not look at his own son.
Sam is the great champion of the generation before, the one who killed the dragon of the Kashaf and whose name alone settles borders. He is also the man who saw a white-haired baby, decided it was a judgement on him, and had it carried up a mountain and left.
He comes back for Zal years later, and the poem lets him say out loud that he was wrong. It does not let him off.
