Bahram is one of Goudarz's sons, and the story everybody keeps is the smallest one. After a night action he finds his whip is missing, and his name is cut into the handle. He turns round and rides back into the field alone to get it, because a name left lying there is a thing the enemy can use.

He is caught out there. The poem tells it without a word of comment, which is worse.
