Tous is Nowzar's son, which makes him royal, and he carries the Kaviani banner, which makes him the standard the army forms up on. Nobody questions his courage. Everybody, at some point, questions his judgement.

He is the commander whose temper starts the quarrel, whose route is the bad one, and who is the reason Forud dies. The Shahnameh is unusual in keeping a man like this at the front of the story instead of quietly writing him out.
