Seven years alone in enemy country, looking for a boy he had never seen.
Iran needs Kay Khosrow, who is a child in Turan and does not know who he is. Giv goes to get him. He goes by himself, because a party would be noticed, and he is gone seven years.
The poem does not make an epic of the search. It makes an epic of the patience: a man crossing one kingdom after another with no help coming, on the chance that the boy is real. He brings him home across the river, and that is the moment the war turns.
